About Old Friends at Dream Chase Farm
(The following was submitted by Old Friends) Old Friends is a Thoroughbred Retirement Facility located in Georgetown, Kentucky. Our 92-acre Dream Chase Farm is home to over 50 rescued or retired racehorses whose track and/or breeding careers have come to an end. In all, Old Friends cares for nearly 80 retirees.
Motivated by the reported death of Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand in a slaughterhouse, Old Friends made a commitment to preventing such travesties in the future. And so our aim is to provide a dignified retirement to any racehorse in need. We are also the only facility in the country to accept stallions and so we are quite proud of the 20 former sires in our midst. Over the years, our farm has become a rural Hall of Fame, presented daily to tourists. Our open-door policy has reunited these great athletes with their fans and has contributed to public education on the need for industry reforms when it comes to the life-long care of racehorses. Because even racing's biggest stars can have perilous fates. Recent additions include the great sire Jade Hunter, Horse of the Year Black Tie Affair, Eclipse champion The Wicked North, Eclipse-winning mare Hidden Lake, Hollywood Gold Cup winner Early Pioneer, and the top stakes horse Tour of the Cat, whose journey to Old Friends was recently chronicled in the New York Times. Our horses may be past their prime, but in this environment they are again celebrities generating income - income that supports other horses in need, contributes to Old Friends' goals, and contributes to such state programs as Kentucky Proud and Kentucky tourism.
Our long-term objective includes the formation of Old Friends farms around the country using the business model created in Kentucky. But more importantly, our hope is that we can compel the racing industry to create long-term care plans for any horse that is bred to race.
